Lightbeam Health Solutions Chooses Check Point to Protect Sensitive Info in Hybrid Cloud Environment

“Our commitment to security is what differentiates our cloud-based service. Check Point CloudGuard Network Security extends the same security that we have in our data centers. We’re not sacrificing protection for agility and scale. Customers’ data is safe no matter where it resides.”
– Jay Orler, Vice President, Infrastructure and Security, Lightbeam Health Solutions

Lightbeam Health Solutions
Lightbeam Health Solutions provides a data analytics platform that unifies claims and clinical data to help healthcare organizations provide superior patient care with lower costs.

Defending Protected Health Information is Mission #1

Lightbeam’s technology provides Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), payers, large provider groups, health systems, and other healthcare organizations with actionable information that helps them better manage patient care while reducing costs. The company aggregates and analyzes high volumes of clinical and claims data using advanced modeling, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and reporting technologies. Customers access their information through their accounts in the customer portal.
“Our biggest security concern at Lightbeam is Protected Health Information, or PHI,” said Jay Orler, Vice President, Infrastructure and Security for Lightbeam. “Protecting our customers’ data is not only required by HIPAA, it’s also critical to maintaining customers’ trust in us as a service provider.”

When the company began, operations were based in brick-and-mortar data centers. However, continual changes in the healthcare industry, new technologies, and company growth were outpacing the data centers’ abilities to keep up. Lightbeam began to extend its infrastructure to the cloud.
“The need for agility, scale, and cost-effectiveness are increasingly driving us to the cloud,” said Orler. “We’re moving to Microsoft Azure, which will help us achieve all of those benefits. But we also need the same level of security in the cloud that we have in our data centers. We got that with Check Point CloudGuard Network Security.”

Unifying the Architecture for Both Environments

Lightbeam adopted Check Point to gain consistent protection across its physical and cloud infrastructures. The architecture provides complete threat prevention, which seals any security gaps. It also shares immediate threat intelligence automatically across both environments. Orler and his team can manage security for both environments with consolidated security management for unmatched efficiency.

Within the architecture, Check Point CloudGuard for Microsoft Azure seamlessly protects workloads, data, and assets with secure connectivity between the Azure cloud and on-premises environments. CloudGuard Network Security brings the same firewall, IPS, data loss prevention, zero-day protection, and other threat prevention capabilities to the cloud that Check Point firewalls deliver to Lightbeam’s physical data centers and offices.

In addition, Lightbeam also leverages Check Point Harmony Email & Office to provide zero-day threat protection, and data protection to its Microsoft Office 365
environment. Harmony Email & Office prevents data loss and scans email messages and attachments for malicious content, thus blocking phishing email attacks and protecting file sharing and messaging. Check Point Harmony Email & Office provides comprehensive Gen V threat protection across the enterprise, with shared threat intelligence across network, cloud, and mobile devices, and simplified management.

Enabling Differentiated Secure Services

“Our commitment to security is what differentiates our cloud-based services,” said Orler. “Check Point CloudGuard extends the same security that we have in our data centers. We’re not sacrificing protection for agility and scale. Customers’ data is safe no matter where it resides.”

CloudGuard Network Security also gives Lightbeam the software agility they need for continuously innovating their application and service offerings. They can easily and securely spin up and tear down virtual servers to test new product features without having to continuously reconfigure their security infrastructure. As a software company, that capability enables Lightbeam to automatically scale security protection with changes in its application for faster time-to-market.

Increasing User Security Awareness

Check Point Harmony Email & Office is an integral tool in preventing data leaks and stopping incoming email threats. It quarantines malicious links and attachments and notifies users that their email was quarantined. Orler’s team can now see why a message was blocked and decide whether it can be restored to the user or stay blocked. Check Point reports provide the security team with real-life examples that they use to educate users about threats.

” Harmony Email & Office gives us detailed visibility into threats, such as phishing and email spoofing,” said Orler. “I can take a spoofed email that supposedly came from the CEO to the CFO and go show it to the executive team so that they know what to look for—and avoid.”

Unified Management Makes Life Easier

The Lightbeam team manages all of its security centrally in a single pane-ofglass through Check Point R80 Unified Security Management. CloudGuard, data center appliances, logs, cloud-based security, and policies are all visible and manageable in one place.

“I have the same visibility in the cloud and our physical data centers in one console,” said Orler. “I don’t have to go to multiple places to get a view of what’s going on in my environment. When we migrate to Check Point R80.10, I’m excited about having even more efficiency and visibility into policies.”

Keeping Pace with Moving Targets

Industry and technology changes continue rapidly. Microsoft Azure releases new features, Lightbeam’s own product continues to evolve, and cyber threats change tactics. Lightbeam is pleased that Check Point stands beside them to keep pace.

“We trust Check Point,” said Orler. “Check Point keeps us protected and the Check Point name gives our security portfolio significant credibility. It builds customers’ confidence that they can trust Lightbeam with their data.”
